The Episcopal Parish of Alton consists of St. Paul's, Third & Market and Trinity Chapel, 1901 State St. The building that houses St. Paul's was constructed by Captain Benjamin Godfrey in 1834 and was offered for use by all organized religious groups. Alton Episcopalians elected their first Vestry on February 20, 1836. In 1845 St. Paul's purchased the building they had been using for $1800. Later, before 1870, a group of Episcopalians were meeting in a private home in North Alton. As attendance grew, it became necessary to build a chapel for a Sunday School Mission. Trinity Chapel was constructed in 1870 for $2000. Throughout its history the Episcopal Parish of Alton has withstood war, severe economic hardships and absence of clergy, but the parish stood united during those hard times and has continued to persevere improve, and most of all, grow.
Beyond its rich heritage, the Episcopal Parish of Alton, strives to be contemporary by offering diverse programs, providing community outreach and celebrating with joy the Good News of God's love of us. The purpose of the Episcopal Parish of Alton is to be a worshiping and loving community which offers resources for living joyfully and successfully.
The Episcopal Parish of Alton has as its mission: the knowing and praising of God and his Son Jesus, outreach to the needy, and the giving and receiving of love. The Episcopal Church believes in and worships one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It is a church which is both Catholic and Protestant, ancient and reformed, liberal and conservative, active and reflective and whose faith is based on Holy Scripture, and nearly two thousand years of tradition and reason. The baptized members of the Episcopal Church celebrate newness of life in and through Jesus Christ by regular weekly communion and are warm friendly people who would like to know you.
The Episcopal Parish of Alton is a parish within The Diocese of Springfield, part of Province 5. We hold a variety of understandings about how God is involved in our lives, and we vary in age, race, politics, lifestyle, and tradition.
We want to help you feel at home. If you desire, an usher will seat you next to one of our members, who can help you during the service. We can direct you to pamphlets, or books in the library to learn more about our denomination. During coffee hour and adult classes are good times to ask questions.
